Student Visa Risk factors
The Department of Immigration associates a certain risk to the issue of Student Visas, and to this effect base the different Student Visas on assessment factors such as the applicant's nationality and their intended area of study and also the record of the college they intend to attend. Transition from Student Visa to Permanent Residence
Students who have obtained certain Australian qualifications are potentially able to apply for a range of permanent or temporary visas on completion of their studies. The following visa is specifically design to facilitate the transition from student visa to permanent residency.
Subclass 485 - two streams
Subclass 485 Skilled Graduate
This is an 18 month temporary visa for overseas students who have obtained an Australian trade or diploma level qualification while studying in Australia after at least 2 years study. The qualification must lead to an occuppation listed on MLTSSL. This is not a points tested visa and it allows recent graduates to remain in Australia for 18 months. The time can be used to gain the necessary skills, work experience or improve English to be able to apply for permanent visa or another appropriate visa later on.
Subclass 485 Post Study Work Visa
The Post Study Work Visa is normally a two year visa, in some cases even longer, which has unrestricted work rights. It is available to applicants who have completed two years of full time study in Australia for the award of a Bachelor degree or higher. The degree can be in any field - it is not restricted to any occupations list. This visa helps to meet the requirements for a permanent visa. This could be by completing Australian work experience so to meet the skills assessment requirements or to get extra points for Australian work experience or by using the time to achieve higher English scores.
